The Antacid Epidemic

The Antacid Epidemic has become rampant in recent years. While antacids are necessary in some cases, the are notoriously overused.

Did you know that generic Prilosec was the sixth most prescribed drug in 2010 with over 53 million scripts written? This says nothing as to over the counter use either.

Unfortunately long-term can have serious health consequences including malabsorption of vitamin B12 and calcium, bacterial overgrowth, lowered resistance to infection, and more.

A few months back I had a client come in complaining of chronic acid reflux. He had been taking over the counter antacids every day for the past eight years.

One of the more important takeaways from the viscera lessons during P-DTR Advanced was learning how to assess for an overactive vs. under active enterogastric reflex.

For those who are unfamiliar with this reflex, it serves to maintain an appropriate level of alkalinity vs. acidity as well as gastric motility within the stomach.

After testing, we found that his enterogastric reflex was in fact, under active.

His stomach was undergoing too much parasympathetic activity and releasing far too much HCl as a result.

We corrected the dysfunctional signaling to the viscera and began the waiting game to see how he would fare over the coming weeks and months.

How did everything turn out?

It’s been four months and he’s taken antacids exactly once.
